According to foreign media reports, the latest data released by the South Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism shows that the purchase rate of electric vehicles in South Korea in 2023 was 9.3%, far lower than China (22.2%), but higher than the United States (7.2%), Japan (2.9%), and India (2.1%). According to data, the total domestic sales of Korean cars in 2023 were 1.7497 million units, of which 162500 were electric vehicles, accounting for 9.3%.

It is worth noting that the proportion of electric vehicle purchases in the South Korean market was only 1.9% in 2019, and has been increasing year by year since then. It was 2.4% in 2020, 5.8% in 2021, and 9.7% in 2022, but began to decline in 2023 (9.3%). According to foreign media reports, the reason for this may be related to insufficient automotive charging infrastructure, rising charging costs, and higher prices of electric vehicles.
Based on previous news, data disclosed by the Korean Automobile Import Association shows that in January of this year, there were approximately 13000 newly registered cars imported from South Korea, a decrease of 19.4% compared to the same period last year. The association believes that the traditional off-season combined with uncertain subsidies for electric vehicles, delayed production, and insufficient inventory of some brands have led to a decrease in sales in January. According to research institution data, the number of new electric vehicles registered in South Korea in January decreased by 80% compared to December last year. Among them, Tesla only sold one new car in South Korea in January, which is less than Rolls Royce (9 cars) and Lamborghini (7 cars). Foreign media reported that a series of unfavorable factors, from safety issues to a lack of pricing and charging infrastructure, have suppressed the demand for electric vehicle purchases.
It is understood that the Tesla Model Y sold 13900 units in South Korea for the entire year of 2023, making it one of the best-selling cars in South Korea. However, according to the latest subsidy policy for electric vehicles released by the South Korean Ministry of Environment, some models of Tesla will be greatly affected in the future. In September 2023, the selling price of Tesla Model Y in South Korea was 56.99 million Korean won (approximately RMB 308300). (Compiled by Yao Yu from Autohome)
